MEGA Science Experience 2009: Hands-On Science Fun

Have you ever made your own roller coaster?
Held a baby dinosaur?
Been up to your elbows in goo?

The students, staff and family members of Gaudior Academy had a chance to do all this and more.  Throughout the day on Friday, November 20th, Gaudior students explored Newton's laws through hands-on science with the help of Brian Cressman and David Lamb from the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum.  After discussing the concepts of energy, force and motion, students experienced these principles first hand as they built and designed their own roller coasters.  On each coaster, students utilized their own structural adaptations such as twirls, loops and swirls, allowing them to adjust their designs for maximum velocity - and fun.

In the evening, students returned to school with their families to participate in even more science-based fun.  Children and adults of all ages learned about physics, chemistry, biology, math and earth science through 20 different hands-on experiments.  Students also had a chance to meet and hold Kami, a robotic dinosaur who responds to touch and movement.

To our many volunteers who participated in the MEGA Science Experience:  Your contribution of time and energy was invaluable.  Thank you for helping make our evening a success!

"It was so much fun!  We got to build roller coasters.  We made loop-de-loops - 3 of them!" Jeremy, Level 2

"I loved the gooey cornstarch thing.  I learned about acids and bases." Ryan, Level 3

"I learned how to make colors with food coloring and soda water, but my favorite part was making the slime because it was so much fun - and so slimy.  My dad thought it was gross!" Xeviohna, Level 2
