Level 2

First & Second Grade

First and second grade children are inquisitive and eager to learn about the world around them and their place in it.  Natural curiosity abounds, social and physical skills are rising, and the need to communicate and express thoughts clearly becomes even more important.  Recognizing the needs of the multiple intelligences, Level 2 offers many opportunities for children to thrive, addressing the social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of each student.  Reading, writing, mathematics, social studies and science foundations are solidly built and nurtured, allowing children to reliably communicate with others and grow into problem-solvers and confident leaders.

Daily opportunities that develop fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness and divergent thinking processes are all part of the joyful atmosphere found within the Level 2 classrooms.  Literacy, mathematics, social studies and science experiences are part of an integrated curriculum that helps students actively engage in their learning and spark imagination.  Students continue to travel to the art studio twice a week, as well as further engage in bi-weekly classes in Spanish, Music and Physical Education that broaden cultural awareness, global appreciation, natural rhythms and spatial perception.

Level 2 provides a unique opportunity for students to teach and learn from one another in a multi-age classroom.  Children stay within the same level for two consecutive years, allowing students to create deep and meaningful relationships with their teachers and one another. With small class sizes of 2:24, students are encouraged to become leaders within the classroom in roles they find most comfortable. Community agreements such as mutual respect, attentive listening, and group participation are fostered and cultivated, allowing each child to develop skills at their own pace in a comfortable and friendly environment.
