Level 3

Third & Fourth Grade

In both third and fourth grade, children experience remarkable growth in their social and critical thinking skills. The solid foundation of literacy, mathematics, social studies and science formed in prior grades is now built upon with a greater awareness of a child’s changing intellectual and emotional abilities.  Recognizing the needs of the multiple intelligences, Level 3 offers many opportunities for children to thrive in a more independent environment designed for broader application of new reading and writing abilities.  An integrated curriculum engages students in a joyful atmosphere, allowing children to nurture their own methods of self-expression while continuing to learn to reliably communicate their thoughts and feelings with others.

Level 3 students are encouraged to further explore and fine-tune their reading and writing skills in classrooms rich in print materials and technological resources.  Daily opportunities for developing problem-solving and divergent thinking skills are part of the integrated curriculum found within the Level 3 classrooms.  Children actively engage in their learning processes, helping them to form responsible and respectful attitudes towards themselves and the world around them.  Students continue to travel to the art studio twice a week, as well as further engage in bi-weekly classes in Spanish, Music and Physical Education that broaden cultural awareness, global appreciation, natural rhythms and spatial perception.

Level 3 provides a unique opportunity for students to teach and learn from one another in a multi-age classroom.  Children stay within the same level for two consecutive years, allowing students to create deep and meaningful relationships with their teachers and one another. With small class sizes of 2:24, students are encouraged to become leaders within the classroom in roles they find most comfortable. Community agreements such as mutual respect, attentive listening, and group participation are fostered and cultivated, allowing each child to develop skills at their own pace in a comfortable and friendly environment.
